Eligibility for Grades 1-12 Students

To qualify to register at Vista Virtual School, the student must:

1. Be at least six (6) years of age as of December 31, 2021.

2. Be less than 20 years of age as of September 1, 2021. Students over the age of 20 can register for adult upgrading.

3. Be a Canadian citizen, a lawfully admitted permanent resident, a child of a Canadian citizen, or a child of a lawfully admitted permanent or temporary resident. International students can register for summer courses, but will be subject to international student tuition fees. Students must provide proof of citizenship (i.e., birth certificate, landed immigrant, or resident documentation) and students with study permits must also provide their guardian’s citizenship documentation.

4. Be a resident of Alberta. Alberta Education requires parents or guardians of school-age students to remain in the province until at least September 30 of the school year. Students must maintain an Alberta address, even if they are temporarily residing elsewhere, and must submit proof of residency upon request.*

5. Have successfully completed any required prerequisite(s) of the course request. VVS requires confirmation of prerequisite completion.**

6. Not be taking the same course at another school in Alberta. VVS is unable to register students in a course for which they are, or were, already registered in during the same term with a different school.

7. Not be federally funded, such as First Nations students living in a First Nation community whose educational expenses are paid by the federal government. As VVS is a provincially funded school, federally funded students can only register with VVS through an Education Services Agreement.

8. Provide additional documentation in support of student needs as required, including Individualized Program Plan, psychological/psycho-educational assessments, and/or medical assessments/documentation.

* Proof of Alberta residence is ideally provided in the form of an Alberta property tax assessment, with proof of payment for the current year, or, if residence is not owned, a current lease agreement from the property manager valid for at least the school year, as well as a current utility bill for your Alberta residence. At the principal’s discretion, your income tax receipt showing that you filed and paid taxes in Alberta for the previous year may be considered. VVS may also accept an Alberta Health Card, Alberta driver’s licence, or utility bill.

**Students entering grades 1-10 must upload their final report card from the previous school year.  VVS accepts Detailed Academic Reports (DARs) or transcripts from Alberta Education for students applying for senior high courses. If schooling was completed outside of Alberta, please upload your transcript or final report card. Please note, applications submitted without the prerequisite may be declined and students will be asked to reapply at a later date.

Eligibility for Adult Learning

To qualify to register for adult upgrading at Vista Virtual School, the student must:

  • Be 20 years of age or older as of September 1 of the current school year.
  • Be a Canadian citizen or lawfully admitted to Canada for permanent or temporary residence. Students must provide proof of citizenship (i.e., birth certificate, landed immigrant paperwork, or resident documentation).
  • Be a resident of Alberta. Alberta Education requires students 18 years of age or older to remain in the province at least until September 30 of the school year. Although a student may be residing elsewhere temporarily, they must maintain an Alberta address and submit proof of residency upon request.*

* Proof of Alberta property is ideally a tax assessment with proof of payment for the current year or, if a residence is rented, a current lease agreement from the property manager valid for at least the school year, as well as a current utility bill. At the principal’s discretion, an income tax receipt showing filed and paid taxes in Alberta for the previous year may be considered. VVS may also accept an Alberta Health Card, an Alberta driver’s license, or a utility bill.

  • If you did schooling outside of Alberta:
    • Visit Alberta’s graduation requirements, credentials, and credits page to learn about the many ways to finish high school in Alberta.
    • Upload a copy of your high school transcript and/or other applicable post-secondary marks in your VVS application form for review by our academic counselors. It is helpful for adult students to create an Alberta Student Number (if they do not have one) and include it in their registration. Any courses completed with VVS will be on Alberta high school transcripts.
    • If you studied outside of Canada, you may want to look into International Qualifications Assessment (IQAS).

Proof of Citizenship: You will be required to upload your citizenship documentation into the application. VVS will accept the following:

  • Canadian or Alberta Birth Certificate
  • Canadian Passport
  • Canadian Citizenship Certificate/Card (both sides)
