New Courses, New Rules

What’s New for the 2019-20 School Year?

Vista Virtual School (VVS) now offers more options for part-time and adult students to take Elective and Career and Technology Studies (CTS) courses. These courses are taught by VVS teachers.

Starting October 1, 2019, there are specific rules for these Elective and CTS courses:

  • One credit Elective and CTS course(s): You have three months* from the course registration date to complete your course requirements.
  • Three credit Elective and CTS course(s): You have six months* from the course registration date to complete your course requirements.
  • Five credit Elective and CTS course(s): You have six months* from the course registration date to complete your course requirements.
    * Extensions may be granted with teacher approval, upon presentation of a reasonable completion plan.

What are the New Courses VVS Offers?
See the full course list on the Course Catalogue (PDF), the Course Listing page, or a list of VVS-taught CTS and Elective courses.

Why Do We Have These Rules?
Course completion deadlines for CTS and other Elective courses have been set to allow students to complete their assignments and evaluations in a timely manner, while still allowing enough time and balance to complete any other courses in which they are enrolled.

What Courses Does This Apply To?
This applies to all VVS-taught CTS and Elective courses for part-time and adult students registering after October 1, 2019. Effective September 1, 2020, all VVS-taught courses will follow these requirements for part-time and adult students.

It does not apply to VVS CTS and Elective courses that students have already registered in for the 2019-20 school year, to core course registrations (including mathematics, social studies, English, and science) in the 2019-20 school year, or those contracted to Alberta Distance Learning Centre; the deadlines communicated by your teacher are applicable for these courses.

How Does This Affect Full-time Students?
Full-time students are encouraged to discuss their course direction with their Academic Counsellor, as full-time students follow the September to June school year.
