The government of Alberta declared state of public health emergency on Tuesday, November 24 in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19, which mandated, among other things, a transition to at-home learning for students in grades 7 to 12 effective Monday, November 30.
As a distance learning institution, Vista Virtual School is far less impacted by this decision than most Alberta schools. Nevertheless, the move by the province does affect a few aspects of what will otherwise be business-as-usual at VVS.
Support Staff Working From Home
All VVS support staff will be working home from Monday, November 30 until Friday, January 22. The Calgary campus will remain open for exams and other business, but strictly by appointment. Those wishing to visit are requested to book an appointment in advance and to wear a mask.
As of November 30, the VVS support phone line (1-855-974-5333 x5317) will strictly be a voicemail service. All voicemails will be redirected to the VV Support inbox and will be responded to in the order in which they are received. Please note that we may respond to voice messages in email form.
Unless otherwise stated, all other phone numbers and extensions will remain the same during this period.
Diploma Exams Optional for Remainder of School Year
Alberta Education has announced that the remainder of the year’s Provincial Diploma Exams, which include the January, April, June, and August sittings, will be optional. All students will be exempt from writing these exams, with the exception of:
- Students who do not have a passing mark on their transcript.
- Students looking to raise their course mark or who otherwise want to have a diploma exam mark on their transcript.
The decision to write diploma exams during the 2020-2021 school year resides with students and their parents. Students still wishing to write Diploma Exams are encouraged to talk to their teachers.
