Welcome to 2020-2021! A Message to Incoming Students and Families

Welcome to Vista Virtual School! We hope you had a safe and enjoyable summer vacation, and that you’re rested and refreshed for the coming school year.

We’ve all heard the quote “May you be cursed to live in interesting times.” While nobody can agree on where this quote originally came from, we can certainly all agree that these are interesting times.

For families across Alberta and around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown academic plans into disarray. For Vista Virtual School, the pandemic has meant an unprecedented surge of demand for our distance learning model, and our staff have been scrambling to stay on top of it all.

This year more than ever, many of you reading this will be joining us for the first time.

COVID-19 has had serious effects on all our lives, and not even this school has been immune. Our 2020 graduates had to celebrate virtually, and in-person field trips and other normal highlights of the school year have had to be cancelled, and remain on hiatus for the foreseeable future.

In addition, we are now seeing our capacity as an online school being put to the test by this current flood of new applications, which is unlike anything we’ve seen before. That said, we are—and have always been—a real community to whom our students and families can always look for support. Together, this online educational community will continue to thrive into its 25th year in 2021.

Those of you who are new to us (and to distance learning) will want to check in with teachers and academic counsellors to make sure you or your child have everything set up at home for a successful school year. Our website is also a valuable source of information on everything from student resources to advice on getting the most out of your VVS experience.

These are strange times indeed, but we sincerely hope VVS will be an anchor of stability for you amid all the uncertainty. We are thrilled that you have decided to make VVS your partner in schooling for the 2020-2021 school year, and we wish you nothing but success and positive experiences this year!
