Over the past two years, Finn B has been a supporter of his sister in the Special Olympics. He saw that she needed help keeping up with workouts and staying focused, so he jumped in whenever their parents couldn’t.
Finn does more than volunteer; he is a source of motivation. He helps his sister complete her workouts by counting reps and sets and planning the order of her exercises. And when it comes to swimming, Finn is right there beside her, teaching and encouraging her.
In an amazing hour-long swim session, Finn helped his sister swim over 30 lengths, which is more than she ever had before. Finn’s dedication is not measured in laps; it is seen in the confidence and strength he helps his sister build.
Grade 11 student Cooper Hoskins-Marasse, driven by his interest in filmmaking, volunteers for the CSIF (Canadian Society of Independent Filmmakers) and another company called HM4U (HappyMedia4U).
CSIF
In October 2023, Cooper’s involvement with CSIF started unexpectedly. While intending to become a member, his plans took an interesting turn. In a conversation about joining, a member of the volunteer team came up. This conversation led Cooper to volunteer at the CSIF member screening at Globe Cinema just days later.
When volunteering, his tasks involve being the friendly face at the front, welcoming attendees, scanning tickets, and guiding them to seats, snacks, and restrooms. It is not just about the work for Cooper; he also gets to meet actors, filmmakers, and other attendees involved with the films being showcased and witness the incredible short films firsthand.
What really excites Cooper about this opportunity is the variety it offers. He is thrilled about the chance to help in different ways, meet diverse talents, and soak up a ton of knowledge.
HM4U
Cooper’s role at HM4U involves hands-on film production tasks like moving equipment, handling sound and lights, and tackling any other tasks that come his way. He really enjoys working with a team to bring creative ideas to life. His volunteering journey with HM4U began in October 2022.
The heart behind Cooper’s HM4U dedication is his friend Ken. When Ken faced a cancer diagnosis last fall and needed support to craft his films, Cooper stepped in to lend a helping hand.
Labeebah Oke, a dedicated grade 9 student, is a force of volunteerism at five different organizations throughout Edmonton.
Edmonton Food Bank
Labeebah joined the Edmonton Food Bank two months ago. She heard about the opportunity through a school newsletter that highlighted the need for donations and volunteers to help those facing food insecurity. Her role involves building hampers and sorting donations.
Edmonton Public Library
About a month ago, Labeebah found an opportunity to volunteer at the Edmonton Public Library through their website. She became part of the reading buddy program, engaging kids in grades 2-4 with reading and interactive activities.
Art Gallery of Alberta
Last month, through personal online research and word-of-mouth, Labeebah learned about volunteer roles at the Art Gallery of Alberta. Intrigued by the idea of immersing herself in art and culture, she became an education volunteer. Her role involves supporting classes by preparing supplies, cleaning the classroom, and assisting the students and educators.
Canadian Islamic Center – Al Rashid Mosque
Labeebah’s involvement with the Canadian Islamic Center – Al Rashid Mosque began two years ago, when she became inspired by the impactful work of their volunteers during a carnival event. She now contributes to various events at the center, including the bi-annual Eid carnival.
Nigerian Canadian Muslims Edmonton Association
Two years ago, Labeebah became involved with the Nigerian Canadian Muslims Edmonton Association. This stemmed from attending their events and feeling a deep connection to her community and culture. After experiencing the support and camaraderie within the association, she felt a strong desire to give back. Since then, she has been actively assisting with their initiatives and events to contribute to the growth and empowerment of her fellow Nigerian-Canadian Muslims in Edmonton.
Most Memorable Moment
The most memorable experience Labeebah had while volunteering was packing hampers at the Edmonton Food Bank for families in need. She carefully packs each hamper with her whole heart, understanding that someone would be opening that box and finding relief, hope, and nourishment. It makes her reflect on how fortunate most of us are to have an abundance of food on our own tables, and that fills her with a sense of gratitude and empathy.
Labeebah noted that it was a humbling experience that reminded her of the power of small acts of kindness and the impact they can have on individuals and communities.
Ashline Naicker began her volunteer journey at the City of Calgary swimming pool just two months ago. She was inspired to volunteer there when her sister let her know what a great opportunity it would be to help those within her community.
In her role, Ashline actively supports swim teachers during lessons by assisting in the water. She handles equipment and offers help to students seeking additional practice, making sure that they grasp the skills with extra turns.
Her most unforgettable experience while volunteering happened when a hesitant student was afraid to jump into the deep water. Through Ashline’s encouragement and assistance, the student overcame their fear and took the leap. Following the class, the student expressed her gratitude to Ashline and even gave her a big hug. The smile on that student’s face will be one that Ashline will remember forever.
