Vista Virtual School is proud to support Métis Week, which takes place this year from November 12 to 15. This annual celebration is organized by the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, part of the Métis Nation in Alberta.
What is Métis Week?
Métis Week is a significant cultural event that pays homage to the enduring legacy of Louis Riel, a pivotal figure in Canadian history. On November 16, 1885, Riel was executed for treason due to his leadership in the Red River and North-West Métis resistance, where he defended the rights of the Métis people. This day is now commemorated as Louis Riel Day, a time to reflect on his contributions and the struggles faced by the Métis community.
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government in Alberta has designated the surrounding week as “Métis Week”. The events that take place during this week aim to deepen understanding and appreciation of Metis culture and their history.
