Learning Without Limits

We’re now in the last month of the traditional school year, typically a very busy month. Full-time students should be completing their coursework and writing final exams—and diploma exams for 30-level core courses—or be completing their Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs). Part-time students may also be completing their programs before summer.

For students with a June completion date, that are not going to have their courses finished by June 30, you must contact your teacher to make appropriate plans for the completion of your program. Students taking an Alberta Distance Learning Centre (ADLC) course must adhere to the deadlines set out in those courses (June 30), as there are no additional extensions allowed unless you have been notified already.

We encourage you to re-register for the 2019-20 school year before summer break begins. Re-registering now ensures you receive course materials on time, have your course schedule in advance, and are able to book in any appointments you need with your Academic Counsellor prior to starting your coursework. Re-register for the 2019-20 school year now on the VVS website. Students entering grades 1-9 and 11-12 can register anytime, and those entering grade 10 start registration July 2.

Year-end activity: Join your schoolmates and teachers at Calaway Park in Calgary or Galaxyland in Edmonton on June 21. See more information later in this newsletter and celebrate your 2018-19 school-year successes!

As always, we welcome your comments. If you have any questions or concerns, please phone us toll-free at 1-855-974-5333, and if you have any stories you’d like to share of your experiences with Vista Virtual School and how this is positively affecting your education experience and balancing with your diverse needs, contact Jay Zaal, our communications and marketing specialist.

Sincerely,

Teacher’s Pet - Gerta

Meet Joy Trick’s dog Gerta! Each month we feature one of the pets that are part of the staff families at Vista Virtual School.

Gerta is a 3-year-old Shepherd-cross rescue dog. She likes to hike, kayak and paddleboard. She is good with other animals, but most cats don’t let her get too close.

Helpful Steps when Submitting Information to VVS

Sometimes—especially during peak times of year—you may experience longer than expected wait times for course registration. We aim to have registrations processed in three days or less, but sometimes there are too many registrations at one time to meet this timeline.

But rest assured, as long as you’ve received notification of your registration submission, we have received your registration and will get to it as soon as possible.

Helpful tip: There is a confirmation date that mentions what day we are processing registrations directly in your confirmation email. Make sure to check that date to see if we are in a peak registration time or if there are any delays.

Please be patient, even if it has taken more than three school days, as there is no need to send an email or phone support asking for update if only 72-hours have passed—if we need more information, we will contact you. All registrations are processed as they are received, and we are excited to have you as a student and start your course(s)!

Thank you for your patience.

Tips to Succeed at Distance Learning

Always make sure to get plenty of rest before an exam. It is also valuable to get a proper night’s sleep before embarking on a long study session. If you are too tired, it is typically harder to retain what you have studied.

Check out this article from Maclean’s magazine on studying before bed and memory retention.
