Grades 1-9

We are proud to be the school of choice for Alberta families who want a high-quality education that suits their lifestyle. Our dedicated teachers deliver engaging course content asynchronously and provide academic timelines for each course. This approach is designed to empower students to take responsibility for their education.

We offer an extensive catalogue of courses, designed to meet all of the learning outcomes in the Alberta Programs of Study. Like any other school in Alberta, we report results to parents/guardians and Alberta Education.

Check out this short introductory video of our Associate Principal, Treena Bradbury, describing the types of students we typically see enroll in our grades 1-9 programming.

We exclusively offer full-time programming for students in grades 1 to 9. This means that grade 1-9 students are registered for the full school year and are expected to complete their courses in June.

Primary students are students who are registered with VVS for a majority of their programming in a school year. What’s my student type?

If you are interested in enrolling your child in the new school year as a primary student, please fill out an application here. We recommend reviewing our Registration Checklist and Enrollment Restrictions documents before you start!

All registrations for the new school year must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. MST on September 20, 2024.

If you miss the registration deadline, contact your local school to establish an Education Services Agreement (ESA) with us!

  • Once an ESA is set up with your local division, your primary (full-time) school can register ESA students into courses offered by Vista Virtual School until January 27, 2025.

Our grades 1-9 students are enrolled in compulsory core courses — Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies — at each grade level and Health is added for grades 7-9.

  • Grades 1-3 courses are print-based and grades 4-12 courses are online. All students are required to submit assignments electronically into Moodle. Visit our Course Catalogue for a full list of our course offerings.
  • Grade 1-9 students can expect to work at least 30 hours per week on schoolwork.
  • We offer an adapted and modified personalized learning program for students in grade 1-9 who require support outside the scope of mainstream programming. See our Personalized Learning page for more information.

Those looking to withdraw from a course must fill out and submit a Course Withdrawal Request Form. Students under 18 must have their withdrawal form filled out by a parent or guardian.

There are no tuition or registration fees for primary students.

Required materials are loaned to students at no cost but must be returned at the end of the school year in reusable condition.

Please be advised that we are unable to send you materials for the upcoming school year until you have returned the materials from the previous school year. Not sure what to return? The 23/24 checklists are coming soon!

Refer to our Course Catalogue for materials and pricing. Note: Full payment for materials is due within 48 hours of registration.

Refer to our Shipping Policy for information regarding shipping costs for materials.

Information regarding refunds can be found in our Refund Policy.
