Can I attend VVS if I go to another school/school division?

Yes, provided that you are not registered in the same course in the same term (summer) with another school. You cannot be enrolled in the same course at more than one school concurrently.

What courses will be offered?

Check out our course catalogue based on your Student Type:

If you aren’t sure what your Student Type is, check out the following resources:

Are there class caps? / Can I apply early to hold a spot?

At VVS, there are no class caps as we are not restricted by a physical classroom setting.

There is no option for early application. All applications must be submitted within the set application period.

Students must meet all registration requirements prior to applying.

Can I register for a summer course if I’m taking the prerequisite in Semester 2?

No. Senior high school students must have a final prerequisite course mark on their Detailed Academic Report (DAR; found in myPass), and it must meet our minimum mark requirements prior to registration.

Students transitioning from grade 9 to grade 10 can request courses that do not have prerequisites, such as Career and Life Management (CALM), Physical Education 10, and introductory CTS.

How strict is the summer schedule?
The summer school schedule is very strict, as it only lasts 19 days.Teachers will not accept late work, and no extensions will be provided on assessments due to this short time frame. With this in mind, please take a moment to think about your summer plans. If you are taking a trip, working, or have other commitments, it may be hard to stay on schedule, especially for core courses that can take over 80 hours to finish. Success in summer school takes time and commitment, so make sure you are able to give the course(s) your full attention before enrolling.
Are there any differences on how my summer course is graded by my teacher compared to the regular school year?

No, there are no differences. Teachers are responsible for and must exercise their judgement in assessing how well you have achieved compared to the course outcomes or objectives. The coursework you complete helps them determine this, which is why they need you to finish it. If you do not submit all work, they cannot assess your achievement on all of the curricular outcomes.

When will summer course marks be on the transcript?

Summer course marks are sent to Alberta Education at the end of the summer term, and should be posted on a student’s transcript by the middle of August.

Do I have to go online at a certain time each day?

As VVS courses are asynchronous, students do not have to go online at a certain time each day. However, attendance is monitored through daily logins to complete lessons and the time spent in the Learning Management System (LMS).

  • Consistent and timely submission of assessments according to their timeline dates is also a factor, as is maintaining regular communication with teachers. Vista Virtual School students who do not regularly sign in to their course(s) to complete lessons and do not submit assessments according to their timeline dates will be considered truant.

To meet attendance standards, students should:

  •  Sign into their courses each day and spend an appropriate amount of time working through lessons.
  • Follow the timeline and deadline submission expectations for assessments.
  • Communicate with the teacher and school regarding their attendance and schedule needs or exceptions.

Students must work regularly in their courses, submitting work throughout the summer term, and adhere to their provided timelines. Students should not be away for more than 3 days at a time, with no more than 6 days away total from the course.

Can I start early?
  • No. All summer courses begin on July 1st.
Can I finish early?
  • Yes.
  • Students taking a Diploma course are only limited by the Diploma exam dates, which are set by Alberta Education. You may finish your course work early, but the Diploma Exam may not be written early.
When will I get my materials?
  • Materials are shipped or available for pickup approximately 5 business days after your application is approved, and you have provided the required materials deposit (payment).
  • You will receive an email once your order has been processed by our Distribution Team.
    1. Students who requested pickup at the Calgary Campus will receive an email to schedule an appointment once their order is ready. Be advised, appointments are required and we do not offer same-day pick-up.
    2. Students who requested materials to be mailed will receive an email with their Canada Post tracking number.
How many summer courses are students allowed to register in?
  • Grade 10-12 students may register for a maximum of 10 credits in the summer semester, but only one core course.
  • Adult students may register for a maximum of 10 credits in the summer semester (two core courses).
  • International students may register for a maximum of 5 credits in the summer semester.
Are French Immersion courses being offered in the summer?
  • Unfortunately, no. French immersion courses will be available for Semester 1 registrations.
Can I take a course in the Summer with you and at another school?
  • Students can take summer courses at more than one school, with the exception of the same course. In other words, you cannot take the same course at multiple schools concurrently.
Can I switch courses?
  • Those looking to switch their course after they are enrolled should log in to the SchoolEngage account used for registration and complete the VVS 2024-2025 SUMMER Course Addition/Switch/Withdrawal Form. If your registration has not been processed yet, please email vvsupport@pembinahills.ca to request any changes.
  • A $25 fee will be applied to any course change requests made after your original registration form has been processed. If you submit a Course Additions/Changes/Withdrawals Form requesting a course switch, the fee will be added to your ledger and must be paid before we will proceed with withdrawing the original course and adding the new course.
  • To avoid any delays with your registration, please carefully review your course selections at the time of completing your original registration form. If you have any questions or need assistance selecting courses, please reach out to an academic counsellor.

The deadline to request a course switch is June 6.

How can I withdraw from my course?

Students looking to withdraw from a course should log in to the SchoolEngage account used for registration and complete the VVS 2024-2025 SUMMER Course Addition/Switch/Withdrawal Form.

The deadline to request a summer course withdrawal is July 7 at noon.
